Cookie Policy

1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by websites you visit. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently, remember your preferences, and provide information to website owners. Cookies can be "session cookies" (deleted when you close your browser) or "persistent cookies" (which remain on your device until they expire or you delete them).

2. How LingoQ Uses Cookies

LingoQ uses cookies and similar technologies (such as localStorage and sessionStorage) to run the Platform, remember your preferences, keep you logged in, and understand how users interact with the service. We do not use cookies to serve third-party advertising.

The categories of cookies we use are described below.

3. Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are essential for the Platform to function and cannot be disabled. They include:

  • Authentication tokens: Keep you securely logged in across sessions. Without these, you would need to log in every time you visit.
  • Session cookies: Maintain your current browsing session state (e.g. which video lesson you are currently viewing).
  • Security cookies: Help detect and prevent cross-site request forgery (CSRF) and other security threats.

Basis: Legitimate interest / contractual necessity. These cannot be opted out of while using the Platform.

4. Functional / Preference Cookies

These cookies remember your preferences to personalise your experience:

  • Language and study preferences: Remembers which language(s) you are studying and your UI settings.
  • Flashcard settings: Stores your spaced repetition preferences (e.g. daily card limit, notification settings) so they persist between sessions.
  • Lesson playback state: Remembers where you left off in a video lesson so you can resume without losing progress.

Basis: Consent. Disabling these may result in a less personalised experience and the loss of certain saved preferences.

5. Analytics Cookies

We use analytics tools to understand how users interact with LingoQ, which features are most used, and where issues occur. This helps us improve the Platform. Analytics data is aggregated and anonymised where possible.

  • Page view tracking: Records which pages and features you visit to help us understand navigation patterns and content performance.
  • Error tracking: Captures technical errors and crashes to help us diagnose and fix bugs quickly.
  • Performance monitoring: Measures page load times and API response times to maintain a fast experience.

Basis: Consent. You may opt out of analytics cookies without affecting core Platform functionality.

6. localStorage and sessionStorage

In addition to cookies, LingoQ uses browser localStorage and sessionStorage to store certain data locally on your device. This includes cached lesson data (to reduce loading times), temporary quiz state (so your quiz progress is not lost on a page refresh), and UI preferences such as sidebar state. This data is stored on your device only and is not transmitted to our servers unless you actively save your progress. You can clear this data at any time via your browser's developer tools or by clearing your browser's site data.

7. Third-Party Cookies

Some features of the Platform may involve third-party services that set their own cookies. These include:

  • Payment processors:If you subscribe to LingoQ Pro, our payment provider may set cookies during the checkout process to facilitate secure payment. These are subject to the payment provider's own cookie policy.
  • Google Fonts:We load the Nunito font from Google Fonts, which may result in a request to Google's servers. Google may collect technical data such as your IP address as part of font delivery.

We do not use third-party advertising or social media tracking cookies. We do not allow third-party advertisers to place cookies on your device through our Platform.

8. Managing Cookies

You can control cookies in the following ways:

  • Browser settings:Most browsers allow you to view, block, or delete cookies through their settings. Refer to your browser's help documentation for instructions: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge.
  • Account settings: You can manage certain preferences (e.g. notification emails, study preferences) directly from your LingoQ account settings page.
  • Do Not Track:Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. LingoQ currently does not respond to DNT signals, but we provide granular cookie controls above.

Please note that blocking strictly necessary cookies will prevent you from logging in and using core features of the Platform.

9. Data Retention

Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser. Persistent authentication cookies expire after 30 days of inactivity, or immediately upon logout. Analytics and preference cookies have a maximum retention period of 12 months. You can delete all cookies at any time via your browser settings or by clearing site data for lingoq.study.

10. Changes to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our technology or legal requirements. We will notify you of any material changes by posting a notice on the Platform. Your continued use of the Platform after the effective date of any update constitutes acceptance of the revised Cookie Policy.
